Storage Unit Auctions

Storage unit auctions usually occur when storage unit owners sell off the contents of storage units after the owners fail to pay their monthly storage fees. You can find anything from furniture, antiques, camping equipment and more at storage auctions and often there are more items than listed inside a unit.

All Sales are Final
Many storage unit facilities host auctions on a monthly basis and attending storage unit auctions for the first time can be an interesting adventure. For one thing, many storage unit owners only allow a peek at the units’ contents from the outside so there is no way to determine what all is inside. Regardless of what you find once you have won a storage unit, all sales are final. Storage units are usually open for inspection for only a few minutes before the bidding process starts.

Be aware though, that occasionally listed units may not be available at the time of the auction. This is usually because some tenants wait until the very last moment to come up with back payments or make arrangements with the storage unit owner.

Transporting Unit Contents
After you have won the bid for a storage unit, you have a limited time to clear out the unit, and the time allotted will vary from a few hours to a few days. Some unit owners will allow you to pay an additional storage fee to hold the items until you can arrange transportation; however, in most cases these units must be cleared out by the end of the day. Renting a truck is one way to ensure that you can complete transporting unit contents as soon as the auction closes. Many unit owners will inform you of their transportation requirements prior to the auction.

Unit Items
There are a few tips on how to pick storage units on which to bid, but these tips may not always work out. When purchasing a storage unit’s contents you may be buying an entire household of furniture, memorabilia, home movies and clothing, so be aware that some people may have items that you might not want in your home.

- When looking into a unit notice of any markings on boxes, their condition, if they are closed or taped shut, and look for moving company names or logos.

- Furniture that is ornate or covered can be an indicator that it is valuable and noticing sheet covered wooden furniture might also indicate antiques.

- Boxes that have contents marked on them might help you decide if you want to bid on that unit, as often what is marked on a box is what is inside. Books, albums, Christmas decorations, kitchen utensils and the like are indicators of other items that may be inside.

Turning a Profit
Attending storage unit auctions regularly may open up new ways to turn a profit especially if you find a storage unit company in a business district that may contain units filled with manufacturing equipment, supplies, construction tools or materials.

Storage units that hold regular auctions in affluent neighborhoods may auction off units filled with antiques, art, collectibles or other items that you can resell in a variety of ways. eBay, Auctivia and other online auction sites are one way, consignment auctions and consignment boutiques are another ,and pawn shops may also be interested in purchasing items won at storage unit auctions.

Storage unit auctions will always have new and interesting sales and since one never really knows how much or what is contained inside, some regular bidders can make considerable profits from bidding often.
